Description
In the early 80s, crack cocaine hit America like a terrible virus. The epidemic became so prevalent that people were accustomed to doing coke in restaurants, clubs, and hell, even public restrooms. The drug was universal for every ethnicity and race (both Black and white people) seemed to enjoy the drug. Cocaine was so popular that Hollywood even caught on to the wave. They began to exploit the drug by using it in movies (how they currently do with weed today) and even some people think it’s the reason Coca-Cola became so popular. Actors like comedian Richard Pryor even confessed to the world their experience with the drug and how it affected their lives, which for Richard, it almost cost him his life. Now, I don’t say this with the attempt to bash Richard Pryor, after all he is the icon of comedy and without him, we wouldn’t have comedians like Dave Chappelle, Bernie Mac, Chris Rock, and Kevin Hart. Richard wasn’t the only Black person who was infected with this disease. In fact, this disease spread rapidly across the U.S. seemingly affecting every Black community in the country. Causing hundreds of thousands their lives from using the drug or slanging it on the block as well as the imprisonment of hundreds of thousands in which many are still in prison. I look at this event as a very bad epidemic, but modern-day historians will refer to this event as the start of The War on Drugs and yes, it was a war.
